History of Varanasi-Mirror of Indian Culture and Civilization

Situated in Uttar Pradesh on the bank of river Ganag one of the most famous tourist destinations and Hindu pilgrimage centers of India is Varanasi. Varanasi is one of the seven holy places for Hindus. Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest cities, which is called the religious capital of India. Every pious Hindu hopes to visit the city in a lifetime, take a holy plunge in the “Ghats’, walk the pious Panchakosi road which bounds the city and if God wills, die here in old age. History of Varanasi keeps an important place in Indian history.

Varanasi became the capital of the kingdom of Kashi in 6 B.C.Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath. Sarnath is about 10 km away from Varanasi.Kashi is a center of religious, educational, cultural and artistic activities which drew learned men from all parts of world.Husan Tsang is one of them who came to India in 635A.D.

Varanasi went into a destructive phase for three centuries under Muslim from 1194.The temples of this city were destroyed and scholars left the city. When Akbar came to power then he built some new monuments in Varanasi. When Aurangzeb came to power, all things disappeared in 17th century. The 18th century again brought back the lost glory to Varansi.Varansi became part of the state of Uttar Pradesh after India’s independence in 1947.History of Varanasi represents culture, civilization and temple architecture of ancient time.

The Ganga is a holy river to the Hindus.Varansi has a special sanctity for it is believed this is where Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati stood when time started ticking.Varanasi has found place in the Buddhist scriptures as well as the Mahabharata. Shri Ramcharitmanas was also written by Tulsidas here. All this makes Varanasi a holy place and Hindu pilgrimage. The Hindus think that to die in Kashi on the banks of the Ganges is an assurance of heavenly bliss and emancipation from the eternal cycle of birth and death. History of Varanasi is very old but it however lives in the form of old manuscripts and folk traditions but most importantly through its people.
