| Jantar Mantarwas actually constructed for various astronomical purposes like measure the sun’s declination, the star’s declination, the local time, altitude and the planets. It was built with the aim of ascertaining the different eclipses. The meridian pass time, duration of day and night and location of the pole star could be determined. The position of the Zodiac and the constellation of other stars could be detected from Jantar Mantar. Varanasi features many stone devices to indicate and read the speed and the motion of the stars and other planets. There are other smaller and greater structures which are meant to perform as astronomical instruments. Jantar Mantar is an observatory, built by Jai Singh the Maharaja of Jaipur in 1737.Jai Singh was a great admirer of science and technology and he was particularly passionate about astronomy.Jantar Mantar at Varanasi was built in line with Delhi, Mathura, Ujjain and Jaipur observatories. Some of the most important tools found in Jantar Mantar are Digansha Yantra, Dhruva Yantra, Ram Yantra, Krantiveritta Yantra, Samrat Yantra, Dish Yantra and Prakash Yantra.It is a beautiful example of Mughal Rajput architecture. |
